The purpose of the Archives is to collect, preserve, and make available for scholarship significant written and graphic documents pertaining to analytical psychology. Due to spatial and financial limiting factors the Archives must concentrate first on maintaining items already in our collection, then prioritize acquisitions according to importance, uniqueness, and subject matter, with the highest priority given to material concerning Jung's life, family, friends and colleagues, the next priority to the background, development, and membership of the San Francisco Institute, and finally, as resources permit, to the growth of analytical psychology.

The Archives were formally established in 2002 with the strong encouragement of one of the Institutes most respected senior members, Kay Bradway, Ph.D., who subsequently has contributed generously to their financial support. On that initial occasion Dr. Bradway donated the 1961 telegram, sent to the San Francisco Institute, which announced Jung's death. She remained a member of the Archives Committee until the spring of 2007, her 98th year, when she retired from active participation.

The Archives Committee welcomes proposals for donations, and inquiries concerning access to the collection, which, at the convenience of the Institute Librarian, is open to Members of the San Francisco Institute, and, with some restrictions, to candidates, clinic interns, staff, IAAP members from affiliated institutes, members of the Friends of Jung, and of the Analytical Psychology Club. Others may be granted access to the Archives for purposes of legitimate research upon written application to the Archives Committee.
